A Sudan Airways Airbus A310-300, registration ST-ATN performing flight SD109 from Damascus (Syria) to Khartoum (Sudan) with 203 passengers and 14 crew, has crashed and burst into flames. Initial reports by local TV stations suggest more than 100 people killed. At least one slide has been deployed.
The airplane had already attempted one approach to Khartoum, abandoned the approach and diverted to and landed at Port Sudan. The airplane then flew back to Khartoum, when it reportedly went off the runway, broke up and burst into flames at 19:04Z.
Surviving passengers reported, that the right hand engine caught fire shortly after touch down on runway 36, which quickly spread over the entire airplane. Witnesses on the ground, e.g. waiting in an airplane of EgyptAir for departure, reported to see the right hand engine on fire first, too, before the entire airplane got engulfed in flames.
The director of the airport, Yusuf Ibrahim, told local TV stations, that the airplane had landed normally, the flight crew discussing the taxi route with the tower, when the explosion occured.
Sudanese sources state that 13 out of the 14 crew survived the accident.
According to the flight schedule of Sudan Airways flight SD109 originated in Amman (Jordan) and made an intermediate stop at Damascus (Syria) - despite the surprising routing heading north to Damascus, then back to south - on its flight to Khartoum in Sudan.
