AS TRAVEL destinations go, it does not come much further off the tourist trail than the Kazakh city of Uralsk.

So when a British Airways Boeing 747 en route from Sydney to London made an emergency landing at the Central Asian airport on Saturday, passengers and locals were in for a shock.

Michael Bajenov, of Pennant Hills, boarded BA10 at Sydney Airport on Friday afternoon on his way to London for a month-long business trip. About eight hours after leaving Bangkok, the captain told passengers over the public address system that an emergency light had come on indicating a fire in the cargo hold.

The aircraft would have to land at Uralsk, a city of 210,000 people in north-western Kazakhstan.

During the descent the atmosphere on board was very tense, Mr Bajenov said. \"Everybody was extremely nervous,\" he said. \"People tried to hide it but one member of the cabin crew said in 22 years' experience nothing had happened like that.

\"No one was crying except the babies from the increase in pressure, but before the landing there were a few of those glances when people look at each other and ask if they are OK. The man next to me was twitching and sweating. He said he was OK, but he clearly wasn't.\"

And it was not only passengers who were unprepared. Kaliula Karagoishin, a spokesman for the regional governor, Nurgali Asimov, said it was an unusual event for authorities. \"We don't get such big birds landing every day,\" he said.

The jet, with 354 passengers, 18 crew and a cargo of bees, made an emergency landing on a runway described as \"probably one of the bumpiest in living memory\" in a report on the Professional Pilots Rumour Network website, a forum for pilots and industry workers.

But the jet landed safely. The warning of a fire had been a false alarm. Rumours circulated that the bees were to blame. \"We fed the passengers on the plane; they did not disembark into the airport,\" Mr Karagoishin said.

The runway was declared unsuitable for a Boeing 747, so three smaller aircraft were sent to ferry the passengers to London.

Mr Bajenov, who speaks Russian, since childhood and has Russian parents, said crew members were having problems communicating with the Kazakhs, so his offer to translate was gratefully accepted.

The Mayor of Uralsk, Saghinbek Mutashev, told the Herald he rushed to the airport, 18 kilometres from the city, to supervise what might have turned into a major rescue operation. \"You will have to ask them whether they liked our Kazakh food,\" he said.

The Lonely Planet travel website describes Kazakhstan as a \"bewitching, dream-like landscape for those with a taste for the esoteric\". And horse sausage.

When the other aircraft arrived, the passengers boarded by stepping onto the roof of an airport vehicle and then onto a stairway, agency reports said. Contrary to earlier reports, the bees were found in their original packing, an airline spokeswoman said.

The landing had been a \"precautionary diversion\", the regional general manager of British Airways, Don Clark, said in Sydney. \"We diverted the aircraft to make sure everybody was safe and the fault could be looked at,\" he said. Within 20 hours of the landing the passengers had all left, he said. The Boeing was declared ready to fly and left Uralsk yesterday.
