QANTAS Airways (Sydney) continues a hectic schedule of crew training for its first Airbus A380. The new airliner has been flying numerous sectors between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and even Adelaide before returning to Sydney at night. On Saturday afternoon (September 27) A380-841 VH-OQA (msn 014, ex F-WWSK) needed to execute an unplanned missed approach at SYD after a FedEx McDonnell Douglas MD-11F (N603FE) landing before the A380 reportedly lost a part of the port engine cover. A Thai Boeing 777 crew holding for takeoff observed the separation and the A380 was forced to go around to avoid the debris on the runway. The runway was quickly cleared and the A380 routinely landed. The A380 was about five miles from touchdown.
